Delta-3-26-desaturase (D3-DS) activity has been related to a healthy fat pattern, and it may also have a role in male hypogonadism. The aims of this study were to determine D3-DS activity, body composition, and body fat distribution in male patients with late-onset hypogonadism (LOH), and to study possible correlations among these parameters. D3-DS activity was measured as arachidonic acid (AA) conversion rate, in leukocytes of 30 patients with LOH (40 +/- 1 years) and 30 healthy controls (41 +/- 1 years). D3-DS activity in leukocytes was higher in the LOH group (0.22 +/- 0.01 vs 0.16 +/- 0.01 nmol/10(6) cells per hour; P =.0001), with a marked difference between the lowest and the highest activity tertiles. Body fat, body mass index, body fat distribution, lean body mass, arm circumference, leg circumference, arm/leg circumference ratio, D3-DS activity, and leukocyte fatty acid levels were similar between the two groups. Body fat distribution was associated with D3-DS activity, but D3-DS activity was not associated with any other body composition parameter. In conclusion, D3-DS activity in males with LOH was higher than in controls. However, in patients with low D3-DS activity, body fat distribution was similar to the patients with high D3-DS activity.Q:
